Counting Syllables

This comprehensive lesson plan will help your pupils to count syllables verbally. They will then explore the role of vowels in creating syllables in words.

Long a Spelling Choice

Once pupils have learned all of the possible ways to create the long a sound (as in acorn, cake, train etc.), they need to begin to recognise which spelling choice to make. The games and activities in this section will help pupils to build familiarity with a wide variety of long a words.

k or ck?

This lesson is an excellent example of how multisensory methods are used throughout Penguin Planet to teach spelling rules in a meaningful and memorable way. Pupils will make a ‘spiky k’ to help them to understand when to use a k or a ck at the end of a single syllable word. (Note: this lesson works with single short vowel sounds; long vowel sounds are covered in a separate lesson).

Sorting Vowel Sounds

Penguin Planet resources contain lots of activities which focus on common areas of difficulty for children with dyslexia. In this lesson pack, pupils will play games to practise identifying short vowel sounds in words and matching the sound they hear to the written letter.
